| Description | The European Commission has proposed an amendment to the EU Climate Law to establish a 2040 EU climate target of a 90% reduction in net greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions compared to 1990 levels. The proposal follows the Commission’s Political Guidelines for 2024–2029 and introduces a more pragmatic and flexible pathway towards a fully decarbonised European economy by 2050.
The proposal provides long-term certainty for investors and industry, strengthens Europe’s industrial leadership and energy security, and builds on strong public support for EU climate action, as confirmed by recent Eurobarometer findings. |
