TitleSafely planting healthy trees in urban environments in Kosice city
DescriptionKošice, home to Slovakia’s largest public cemetery, has carried out a major revitalization project between 2019 and 2024, transforming nearly 5,800 m² into a greener, more climate-resilient space. The project focused on replacing paved surfaces with water-permeable ones to reduce the urban heat island effect and integrating innovative tree-planting techniques. A central feature of the initiative is the use of the TreeParker system, which provides large volumes of uncompacted, high-quality soil to ensure healthy root growth, while simultaneously supporting traffic loads and managing rainwater runoff at the source. This system allows newly planted trees to thrive even in challenging urban environments such as car parks and plazas. As part of the revitalization, 59 trees were planted, including 29 with the TreeParker system, alongside 1,300 m² of greenery with shrubs, perennials, and climbing plants. The project also modernized the cemetery by reconstructing the entrance area, main staircase, and parking lot, and by installing new smart LED lighting, benches, urban furniture, bicycle racks, 71 parking spaces, and two electric vehicle charging stations. This initiative directly contributes to Košice City’s climate adaptation goals in line with Mission 1 objectives by supporting biodiversity in the urban area, providing solutions for rainwater drainage at the source, and improving the local microclimate. It demonstrates how innovative urban greening and infrastructure integration can enhance both environmental resilience and the quality of public spaces.
