| Description | ARCADIA (Transformative Climate Resilience by Nature‑based Solutions) is a European research and innovation project launched on 1 January 2024 and running until 30 June 2028, with a total budget of about €18.6 million and an EU contribution of €17.6 million. Coordinated by ART‑ER in Italy, the project brings together eight European regions and communities—five “model regions” (Italy, Croatia, Austria, Denmark and Sweden) and three “fellow regions” (Bulgaria, Romania and Slovenia)—to prove that nature‑based solutions (NBS) are key to effective climate adaptation. It aims to accelerate the adoption of NBS by giving these regions access to up‑to‑date, evidence‑based knowledge, tools, services and networking opportunities.
ARCADIA goes beyond demonstrating the effectiveness of NBS; it seeks to create the right social and policy conditions for their large‑scale adoption. It will analyse how people perceive climate risks and potential solutions, and will experimentally design incentives and behavioural “nudges” to foster social acceptance and community action. Regional ambitions and methodologies will be co‑developed within the consortium and implemented through 15 co‑innovation labs that engage local communities and societal partners. Knowledge gained from these labs will be used to up‑scale NBS across regions by developing robust policies, funding schemes, business models and investment tools, helping European cities and regions move towards regenerative, nature‑based climate resilience. |
