| Description | The UPSURGE project is designed to support European cities in advancing their regenerative transition by harnessing the potential of Nature-Based Solutions (NBS). Its core aim is to help cities reduce the environmental impacts of urban life, mitigate air pollution and its health effects, and alleviate climate change stressors through innovative and sustainable approaches.
At the heart of the project is the creation of an EU Urban Regenerative Lighthouse, which will serve both as a reference framework and a reference network for accelerating, transferring, and upscaling NBS. By embedding these solutions into urban policy agendas, UPSURGE promotes co-creation and co-design with citizens and stakeholders, ensuring that solutions are locally adapted, inclusive, and widely accepted.
UPSURGE will provide fit-for-purpose NBS accompanied by supportive digital tools and governance mechanisms, enabling effective urban space regeneration. These solutions are being deployed and tested in five real-life demo cities across Europe, demonstrating practical applications, building evidence, and showcasing how nature-based innovation can become mainstream in urban planning.
Through this approach, UPSURGE not only tackles immediate challenges of climate change and urban pollution but also lays the foundation for long-term resilient, regenerative, and citizen-driven cities. |
