Title | Community driven climate change adaptation - Municipality Horné Sŕnie, Slovakia |
Description | The municipality of Horné Srnie in Slovakia, in cooperation with SPECTRA CE EU at STU Bratislava and building on knowledge gained from INTERREG projects BeReady and CICADA4CE, is implementing a set of green measures to mitigate the negative impacts of climate change in urban environments. The focus is on enhancing public spaces and areas linked to community infrastructure such as schools, social and community facilities. The initiative not only improves the quality and resilience of these spaces but also evaluates their social impact, particularly for vulnerable groups like children and seniors. A key strength of this practice lies in its bottom-up approach, emphasizing co-creation and co-design with the local community. By actively involving residents—and especially young people as future generations of local inhabitants—the project ensures that the implemented measures reflect local needs, foster ownership, and deliver long-term benefits. Applicability in the wider Danube region is high, as this approach provides a transferable model for engaging communities in planning and implementing climate adaptation measures. It highlights how participatory processes can successfully combine environmental, social, and educational dimensions, making urban spaces both greener and more inclusive. |
