TitleBiomass as a toll to improve air quality in urban area
DescriptionThe city of Priboj, Serbia, long known as one of the most polluted urban areas during the heating season due to its location in a mountain valley, faced severe air quality issues from crude oil combustion in its public heating system. To address this, local authorities launched a project in 2019 to establish a small district heating system powered by biomass and to improve the energy efficiency of selected public facilities. By upgrading the energy class of these buildings, heat consumption was reduced, allowing for the optimization of biomass boiler capacity and more efficient energy use. The project’s goals were to improve residents’ quality of life, enhance the energy efficiency of public facilities, provide more comfortable conditions for users, and ensure rational management of the municipal budget. Encouraged by the positive results, the city advanced further in 2021 by completing a new City Heating Plant, which fully replaced crude oil with biomass (wood chips) as the primary fuel. This best practice demonstrates how cleaner energy sources combined with energy efficiency measures can significantly reduce air pollution and heating costs. Its applicability in the wider Danube region is considered moderate to high, especially in cities with similar topography and reliable access to local wooden biomass resources.
