TitleBiogas plants in fighting climate change
DescriptionThe biogas initiative in Botoš village, Zrenjanin (Serbia) demonstrates how renewable energy can be more efficiently utilized through public-private partnerships. While many biogas plants focus solely on electricity production and release large amounts of unused heat into the atmosphere, this project was designed to capture and repurpose that heat. In 2015, a letter of intent was signed between the city of Zrenjanin and the plant operators to use the surplus thermal energy for heating local public facilities, aligning with the city’s commitments under the Covenant of Mayors. The project’s specific goals include reducing unnecessary heat emissions, lowering CO₂ output, decreasing local heating costs, and strengthening both public confidence and local businesses. With support from the GIZ DKTI project “Development of a sustainable bioenergy market in Serbia” (2018), the city explored alternative supply options and identified a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) as the most effective solution under Serbian legislation. This best practice highlights the potential for replicability: other biogas plants located near public facilities could follow this model, partnering with municipalities to make use of excess heat instead of wasting it, thereby advancing climate goals, cutting costs, and boosting local development.
