TitleSelf-sustainable Multisensor System for Monitoring Water Quality in Inland Waterbodies (SMART-Water)
DescriptionThe SMART-Water project enhances water quality monitoring and management in Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Croatia by combining AI models, multi-sensor systems, and geospatial data into a collaborative web GIS platform. Focused on Lake Skadar (Montenegro), Lake Deran (BiH), and Lake Vrana (Croatia)—all protected areas crucial for biodiversity and local communities—the project strengthens cross-border cooperation in tackling climate-related water challenges and transboundary pollution. Its objectives include improving inland water quality monitoring and inspection, fostering regional decision-making through data integration, and engaging citizens in participatory monitoring and awareness-raising activities. By promoting data sharing and regional collaboration, SMART-Water supports more effective management of vital ecosystems and contributes to sustainable water governance. The project also demonstrates a scalable model: its technological and collaborative framework can be applied to other transboundary water bodies facing similar environmental pressures. To ensure long-term impact, regular system maintenance, transparent data practices, and the expansion of the platform to additional regions are recommended
