DescriptionAustria’s Klimaneutrale Stadt initiative is a national mission-oriented programme supporting cities and municipalities in achieving climate neutrality by 2040. Coordinated by the Federal Ministry for Climate Action and the Austrian Climate and Energy Fund, it unites over 45 pioneer cities covering 40% of the country’s population under a shared mission framework. The initiative fosters collaboration among local governments, research institutions, private companies, and citizens to co-create transition roadmaps and pilot innovative solutions in energy, mobility, and urban planning. Through targeted R&D funding and thematic working groups, it strengthens governance innovation and facilitates knowledge exchange across cities. As a result, Klimaneutrale Stadt stands as a model of multi-level, mission-driven cooperation advancing the goals of the European Green Deal in the Danube Region.
