DescriptionThe AFOLU sector plays a crucial dual role in climate action as both a source of greenhouse gas emissions and a natural carbon sink. The article explains that AFOLU emissions mainly arise from intensive agriculture, land-use change, deforestation, and unsustainable soil and water management practices. At the same time, it highlights the importance of healthy ecosystems—such as forests, wetlands, soils, and urban green areas—for carbon sequestration and climate resilience. The paper situates AFOLU within the EU policy framework, particularly the Fit for 55 package and the LULUCF Regulation, which emphasize strengthening carbon sinks and integrating climate goals into spatial planning. It argues that cities, although not traditional agricultural actors, play a significant role in shaping land use, green infrastructure, and urban ecosystems. Drawing on examples from cities participating in the EU Mission “100 Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities by 2030,” the text illustrates a wide range of AFOLU-related measures, including urban green infrastructure, sustainable food systems, forest restoration, and nature-based solutions. It concludes that integrating AFOLU into urban climate strategies is essential for achieving climate neutrality while creating healthier, more resilient, and more liveable cities.
