DescriptionTransport is one of the largest sources of greenhouse gas emissions in cities and also contributes significantly to air pollution, noise, and pressure on urban space. The article explains that these emissions mainly arise from fossil-fuel-based private cars, freight transport, and inefficient public transport systems, reinforced by urban sprawl and increasing mobility demand. It highlights that transport emissions are not only an environmental problem but also a public health and social issue, as car-dependent systems worsen air quality and deepen inequalities. The paper outlines key EU policy frameworks, particularly the European Green Deal and the “Fit for 55” package, which aim to reduce road transport emissions and promote zero-emission mobility. It emphasises the central role of cities, especially those participating in the EU Mission “100 Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities by 2030,” in implementing ambitious transport decarbonisation measures. These measures include electrifying public transport, expanding cycling and walking networks, creating low-emission zones, and investing in charging infrastructure and smart mobility solutions. The text concludes that successful reduction of transport emissions requires an integrated approach combining technological innovation, regulation, spatial planning, and behavioural change to create more sustainable, healthier, and liveable cities.
